Planning for a substitute (especially when you have no idea when they will be coming) can feel more stressful than just showing up sick. You know I am right! You want your students to be good, the schedule to be clear, and the substitute to be prepared. It kind of sounds impossible, but I am telling you that it is easier than you think.
**At the end of this you will see a spot to grab a file that you can edit!!
Now some teachers might say to do this online, but I recommend making a paper copy. It is so much easier for substitutes to look at and follow. You can call me old fashion, but I really do think this is the best option!
Include ALL the Necessary Information
Include this information (update as needed):
1. Classroom Information
Daily schedule (times + specials)
Attendance procedure
Morning and dismissal routines
Line-up spots, restroom rules, lunch procedures
2. Student Information
Class list
Seating chart
Helpful students
Students who may need extra support with behaviors or academics
3. Behavior & Management
Classroom rules and expectations
Attention-getters students know
Reward systems or consequences used daily
4. Emergency Information
Fire drill, lockdown, and emergency procedures
Where to find emergency folders
Helpful teachers or go-to helpers
What Activities Should be Included?
Include atleast 3 days of activities for each subject. You never know how long you will be out so be prepared.
For every subject area you teach, you need activities for the students. Here are few that you may need.
Math
Science
Social Studies
ELA
Avoid new or complicated content. Include activities that the sub and the students will understand.
Review worksheets
Reading and response pages
Writing prompts
Math practice or spiral review
Collaborative posters or coloring activities
Plan more work than you think they’ll need
**Tip: If the activity requires a lot of explaining, it’s probably not sub-friendly😅
I decided to put all this information into a file that you can edit! Hopefully this makes planning your emergency sub plans even easier! PS!!! It is FREE!!
Here is a sneak peak!⬇️⬇️
Final Thoughts
Getting emergency plans ready for a substitute doesn’t have to be overwhelming. When your plans are clear and your materials are ready, you can stay home and be sick and not have to worry about your classroom.
