If you are a new teacher who has no idea where to start with small groups, or an experienced teacher who has never had a handle on small groups, this is for you! On this post I am just giving you a small glimpse, but I have a FULL guide that you can grab for FREE! You just have to click here for that! (and yes, it is completely 100% free!) ➡️➡️
Now let's dive in!!
This is how you would set up and start small groups in your classroom (and remember there is so much more information in the full guide)!
1. Organize Groups
Decide how many groups based on time and class size.
4–5 groups usually work best.
Group by interest, skill, or data - and change as needed.
2. Organize Stations
Always include a teacher-led station.
Add 3–4 others like:
Math/ELA games
Independent work
Partner reading
Technology station
I have so many more options in the full guide!!
3. Create a Rotation Chart
Show group names and station order.
Keep it visible and consistent.
Make group names fun and easy to remember.
4. Plan the Teacher-Led Station
Pick a focus for the week.
Differentiate each group’s lesson.
Examples are included in the full guide!
5. Teach Expectations
Show what to do at each station.
Model transitions and what to do when finished.
Practice and reteach often.
6. Quick Tips
Use timers for transitions.
Keep a “fast finisher” bin.
Prep once a week, not daily.
Jot notes during small group time.
Reassess and adjust groups regularly.
If this was helpful for you, check out the FULL GUIDE! It is s short read, but can be so helpful for your small groups!
Happy Teaching!!
