When teaching mathematics, teachers are continually looking for new ways to engage students and review math concepts. One activity that has gained attention is the use of collaborative colorings. Collaborative colorings serve as a tool for promoting teamwork, problem-solving skills, and mathematical comprehension within the classroom, and they are FUN!

Understanding what a Collaborative Coloring is and how do I tailor it fo rmy students?

At its core, a collaborative coloring activity involves all of the students in a class working together to color a bulletin board image. Now where does the mathematical piece come into play? This is where YOU have to put in just a little bit of work. YOu can either read through these directions that tell you how to put your own questions and answers in or you can watch this video that I made! Watch HERE! The majority of the collaborative colorings are editable. That means you, as the teacher, get to enter in the math that your students are working on. If you look at the picture above you can see that the column of math problems is empty. This is where you will enter in

all your questions. As you can see in the picture to the left step 1 says to write your math problems in table #1 in the 3rd column. After that step you move on to step 2. This is when you start entering in the answer to your questions. Steps 3-12 tell you exactly where to put each answer. It is as easy as that! Once that is all entered, you can print out the student recording sheet (that is the one above) for each student. You will also print out all 30 of the coloring pages. Each student gets 1 or 2 pages and a recording sheet. Once all the pages are colored they make ONE big picture!

Fostering Collaboration and Communication

The BIGGEST benefit of collaborative colorings is the ability to foster collaboration and communication among students. As students work together to color and put together the image, they must communicate with each other in order to put the whole piece together. This collaborative process not only strengthens communication skills but also encourages students to have fun with math!

Reinforcing Mathematical Concepts

Collaborative colorings offer a unique way of reinforcing mathematical concepts in a hands-on and engaging manner. Instead of just completing a math review, worksheet they get to create a fun display that all of them took part of creating. Another added bonus is you can customize the math in this activity, so you can make it fit the exact needs of your students. You can also create several different recording sheets for the same coloring. This allows you to differentiate the math for students on different levels.

All in All

In conclusion, collaborative colorings are a tool that you can use to enrich the mathematical learning experience for your students. As teachers strive to engage students and deepen their understanding of mathematical concepts, collaborative colorings offer a creative and interactive approach that promotes teamwork, problem-solving skills, and mathematical comprehension.

Happy Teaching!
