Alright, so you might be back to school or you might still be on the beach somewhere enjoying summer and sipping on a cold drink:) Either way school will be starting soon for everyone, so I wanted to share my favorite activities! There is some free options here, so make sure you read through!

My top back to school activities:

  • FREE- Would you Rather - Sit in a circle with your whole class and ask would you rather questions. What better way to get to know your class than asking eachother silly questions! My students LOVED this activity and we ended up doing a would you rather question every morning throughout the whole school year.

  • Back to School Collaborative Poster - This is a 27 piece poster that you can make with your students. One piece is for the teacher. One piece has your grade. The other 25 pieces are for your students! They can fill them out and color them and then put them all together to make an apple! On each piece they have questions or things they need to write about or draw. Some pieces might have them draw a self-portrait, draw or write down their faorite food or sport, and other similar questions! Click here if you want to check it out!

  • FREE - Letter Writing - Have students write a letter to themselves for the end of the school year. They can write about what they think they will know by the end of they year, what they will have done, and so on. They can also look back at this letter and see how far they have come throughout they year.

  • Back to School Interactive PowerPoint - This is one of my FAVORITE activities! Here is how it works! You have a PPT (you can make your own or you can purchase one that I made) that has questions and answer options (like this image) on them. You display one slide and your students guess the answer by going to either side of the classroom. The two sides of the classroom represent the two different choices on the screen. In the version that I created, the first half asks the question of what the teacher likes best. The second half asks what the students likes best. This helps the students get to know the teacher and the teacher get to know the students.

  • FREE - Story Time - Read a back to school story to your students! Talk to them about the emotions students feel when coming back to school. Tell them what to expect when they come to school. Let the student tell their experiences with coming back to school. I know some students can be chatty, so let them be a little chatty those first couple days!

  • FREE - Class Contract - Make a contract with your students. Have them decide the classroom rules. (You might think that they will make silly rules, but having the resposibilty of making their classroom rules will help them be more serious.) Once they have made the rules, each student needs to sign the ontract. Make sure you explain to them what a contract is and what they are typically used for.

  • FREE - Back to School Get to Know You Board - Build up your classroom with this FREE activity! Each student gets a paper that they have to completely fill out. On the paper there are boxes with descriptions in them. They hav to find other students who have done those things or find someone who the box applies to. Once they find someone, their new friend signs the box! Then they are off to make a new friend!

So there you go! Those are some of my favorite back to school activities. I hope that you can use atleast one of these with your class, and you can enjoy it as much as I have enjoyed them!

Happy Teaching!!
