Explore the United States with a Collaborative Map

adventureswithalys1

I remember a college class that I took that almost made me quit (I would never do that, but I really wanted to during this class). In this class I had to learn the name and location of each country in the WORLD. For some that might sound fun, but I was struggling! I remember going back to my dorm every day and printing out maps, making maps, laminating and labelling maps. For me, having physical maps in front of me made learning the locations and names so much easier. All that to say, I want students to have the opportunity to use a hands on map when learning about the United States. That is why I created the United State of America State Symbols Collaborative Map!

What is included on this map? This is a map of the United State of America. Each state is included and with each state you will see the state flower, state flag, state bird, state capital and state nickname. Texas is split in two due to the large size of the state. The small states have a corresponding box with the state symbols (due to their size the information was not able to fit on the state itself).

How can I use this in my class? There are SO many options!

  1. Study each state and when you finish studying the state you can color the state in and add it to the map!

  2. Do a research project with your class. Each student studies a couple states, they present on their state, then add their colored in state to the map!

  3. Have your early finishers color in and work to put the map together.

  4. Have all your students fill in the individul states. Laminate the colored states and cut out the laminated states. Keep the pieces together as a puzzle that your students can complete whenever they want!

These are just a few options that you can do! This project works with 1 student all the way up to 50 students!

Take a look at the video below to see how your students will put the display together!

This is an activity that you AND your students will want in your classroom. Once you have it you can use it year after year! Grab your map now so your students can start working on it!

Thanks for reading and happy teaching!
